Archival Recording Paper

Paper 101

One property of paper is its grain, the direction of its fibers. We offer archival paper with grain long fibers. This means the paper you purchase can be expected to print well in a paper copier or digital printer. You can also fold this paper in half on the long side (11”, 14” or 15”) and can expect no cracking for several hundred years. Next, let’s talk about paperweight, the larger the number, the thicker the paper; associate heavy paper with quality and durability. We provide four weights (24#, 28#, 32#, and 36#). For comparison sake, 20# is the weight of copier paper (you might be familiar with the term “20lb. copier paper”). Another property of paper is finish, our archival papers come in two finishes Xerographic and Linen. The finish of Xerographic paper makes it optimum for printing while the Linen finish is better suited to writing by hand. In general, a watermark means quality paper. However for archival storage the watermark on the paper we sell also provides you with a note of production - a chronological record stamped into your paper. Acid-free manufacturing means you are purchasing an acid-neutral product and can expect the lifespan of your paper to be several hundred years. Lastly, quantity, paper is sold by the following measurements: sheets, fillers (also known as quires), reams, bundles, and bales. The modern standard is one filler, which is 100 sheets, and one ream equals 500 sheets.

Paper Knowledge

Manufactured with neutral sizing and alkaline fillers for maximum resistance to deterioration, combined with the purity and strength of cotton fibers, making these ledger papers the clear choice to conserve important documents.
These 100% cotton ledger papers are watermarked providing an unchangeable stamp on the document which assists with document authentication.

Preservation

In general, the fibers in the paper come from wood chips. Acidic chemicals are used during the manufacturing process to convert the chips into wood pulp. These chemicals over a long period of time contribute to the breakdown of the paper fibers so that the paper loses its original strength and durability. The acid chemicals have now become a natural enemy. What is needed is paper free of acid to resist the effects of aging, paper which is permanent and durable for the management of valuable records.
